People have used cannabis for many years and known very little about the different varieties and strains.  Back in the day, you just bought a bag of weed or grew a plant from a seed that you found in the bottom of your bag!  Nobody really knew that different strains gave you a different high.  Cannabis has changed a great deal over the past few decades.  Plants are being cross bred and new strains are always being created.  The terpene profiles are being taken into consideration and different strains are being created to maximize the THC content and flavour profiles.

This blog is really just to talk about the three cannabis varieties: sativa, indica and hybrid.  We will talk about terpenes another time!

Sativa is typically considered a day-time cannabis because it is uplifting and energizing.  It gives you more of a cerebral high and it stimulates the mind and your senses, improving focus and concentration.  The plant is tall and thin with narrow leaves.

Indica is quite the opposite of sativa, therefore usually used at night or when you want to relax.  It provides more of a body high, so it is often referred to as “in-da-couch” because of these qualities.  Indica is also known to give you the munchies!  The plant is shorter and bushier with wide leaves.

Hybrids are a combination of sativa and indica, so you get the best of both worlds.  They can be dominant in either sativa or indica or they could be close to equal parts.   So, depending on the effect you are looking for and the time of day you are consuming, will really dictate which dominant strain you choose.  The plants appearance will take on that of the more dominant variety, however, usually resembles an indica more closely.

The THC and CBD levels also greatly influence the effect of the cannabis.  Everyone responds to cannabis differently so it may take some trial and error to figure out which variety and strain will be the best for you, including the potency!  The main thing is that you are using it responsibly and choosing the right one.
